A moving, funny and unflinchingly honest celebration of family, grief and tradition, Nine Night returns in a brand new Kiln Theatre production.
When Gloria dies, her family gathers for the Jamaican Nine Night — a traditional wake held over nine nights, where the spirit is remembered through food, music, storytelling and togetherness. But as relatives arrive, old wounds reopen, tensions rise, and long-buried truths begin to surface. With eight nights still to go, the family must confront what they’ve avoided for years.
First premiered to critical acclaim at the National Theatre, Nine Night is the award-winning debut play by Natasha Gordon. Widely praised for its emotional depth, humour and authentic portrayal of Jamaican-British family life, it has become a modern British classic.
This new Kiln Theatre production, directed by Amit Sharma, brings a new take on Gordon’s celebrated script, exploring how families grieve, clash and ultimately hold onto each other.
Casting to be announced.
Backed by overwhelming ticket demand and rave reviews from both audiences and critics alike, the National Theatre production of Nine Night formally announces today an extra matinee performance for 20 February 2019. The family-centric play broke records when it transferred to Trafalgar Studios, marking the first play written by a black British woman to run in London’s West End!
Now is your last chance to see this groundbreaking play.

Thousands of stories remain untold by playwrights who dream of seeing the names of their works up in lights. But as paying theatregoers, we have the power to govern what’s on in London theatre because we vote with our wallets. And our ‘vote’ is what helped make history in 2018 when Natasha Gordon’s Nine Night transferred to Trafalgar Studios, becoming the first-ever play by a black female playwright to be staged in the West End. It followed Arinzé Kene’s Misty, which played at the venue a few months prior and marked a change in what was being greenlit for the stage – and what by whom. Nine Night is a perfect reminder to us all that there are voices waiting to be heard, and while some may argue that black British playwrights are few and far between, perhaps the real issue is that they are simply not being discovered.

National Theatre’s Nine Night deserves its transfer. Natasha Gordon (who also appears as Lorraine) has written a story that many will relate to; whether it be as a Caribbean dysphoria story or just as a family drama. The play begins with the death of Gloria; matriarch to 3 generations. Her death isn’t a surprise but it is clear her children Robert (Oliver Alvin-Wilson) and Lorraine don’t know how to cope, let alone deal with all the friends and relatives that descend for nine nights of mourning.
